Lab 1 - Overview of the Nervous System
Cerebral Lobes - Temporal Lobe, Functional Areas
In each figure below identify the parts of the parietal lobe listed. The temporal cortex continues into the lateral fissure where its dorsal surface contains the superior bank of the superior temporal gyrus (also known as the transverse temporal gyrus of Heschl). This gyrus serves as the primary auditory receiving area.
Wernicke’s area is not located in the same place in each person, leading to some confusion. Thus, a lesion (e.g., stroke, axe, etc.) in the posterior part of the superior temporal gyrus will induce Wernicke’s Aphasia in one person, while a lesion of the supramarginal gyrus will induce it in another. For the purposes of this lab, we will assume it is always located in the posterior part of the superior temporal gyrus.
