Many scientists agree that education of our youth is one of the vital components in securing the future of neuroscience. Members of the NRC often dedicate many hours and their expertise to various public education and outreach activities.

Heads Up 7th Grade Science Curriculum

The Neuroscience Research Center was recently involved in a public education project called Heads Up that combined the efforts of the UT School of Public Health, the UT Office of Academic Affairs and Spring Branch ISD to produce science education modules for middle school science teachers.

The NRC played a significant role in the development of the materials and videotape for the module on the Nervous System for the seventh grade. NRC members, John H. Byrne, James A. Ferrendelli, and Pedro Mancias were featured ‘experts’ in the videos, performing in educational vignettes with four child actors. The modules are designed to expand and enhance the science curriculum for 6th through 8th grades in the public schools and are being piloted in the South Texas Rio Grande Valley area.

Lab Tours

Nearly a dozen local high school students recently visited UT-Houston Medical School for a full day of guided laboratory tours, informative presentations and hands-on demonstrations. The activity, offered by the NRC together with UT-Houston's L.E.A.R.N. program, was designed to inform the students of the various and exciting career options in the neurosciences, from academia to industry.
