Who We Are

The mission of the Neuroscience Research Center (NRC) is threefold.

We facilitate scientific research and collaborative efforts in the neurosciences, creating an atmosphere of scientific exchange through multiple routes.

We are involved in training and information exchange for the scientific community, particularly at the graduate and postdoctoral fellow level.

We are involved in community outreach and public education  through collaborations with the Dana Foundation and Partners in Education.

Close to 300 faculty at The UT Health Science Center hold NRC appointments. For a complete list, please see our Membership Directory page.

Benjy F. Brooks Award, John P. McGovern Award: Dr. Pedro Mancias


NRC member Pedro Mancias, M.D. of the Department of Pediatrics, is the recipient of both the Benjy F. Brooks Teaching Award and the John P. McGovern Award this year.

The Benjy Brooks award is presented by the alumni of the Medical School to recognize individuals “who complement and enhance the education program by serving as role models for students.” This award is in honor of Dr. Benjy Brooks, the first board-certified woman pediatric surgeon in the United States.

The John P. McGovern Award, awarded by the endowment from the McGovern Foundation, is given annually to the outstanding clinical faculty member as chosen by the senior class.

Dr. Mancias will moderate the NRC public forum February 6, 2010.

Texas Medical Center Neuroscience Research Center (NRC) serves The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, located in the world renowned Texas Medical Center (TMC).  

The UT Health Science Center includes a Dental Branch, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS), Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Nursing and School of Health Information Sciences (SHIS).

As a comprehensive health science university, the overall mission of the UTHSC-H is to educate health science professionals, discover and translate advances in the biomedical and social sciences, and model the best practices in clinical care and public health.

Brain Awareness Week 2009

NRC Public Forum - Stroke and Vascular Disease

New surgical and technological advances in stroke diagnosis and treatment was the focus of the 14th annual Public Forum for Brain Awareness Week.

Brain Night for Children

Brain Night is an annual event sponsored by the Neuroscience Research Center. This event was packed with several activities, including mini-lectures for children and brain-related demonstrations. Face painting and free gifts. Close to 330 children and their family members enjoyed activities in a two hour time span.
