Who We Are

The mission of the Neuroscience Research Center (NRC) is threefold.

We facilitate scientific research and collaborative efforts in the neurosciences, creating an atmosphere of scientific exchange through multiple routes.

We are involved in training and information exchange for the scientific community, particularly at the graduate and postdoctoral fellow level.

We are involved in community outreach and public education  through collaborations with the Dana Foundation and Partners in Education.

More than 280 faculty at The UT Health Science Center hold NRC appointments. For a complete list, please see our Membership Directory page.

Grotta Assembles Public Forum Panel For 2009 Brain Awareness Week

Dr James GrottaNRC member James Grotta, M.D., is the Chair of the Department of Neurology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  He also occupies the Roy M. and Phyllis Gough Huffington Distinguished Chair and is also Professor and Director of the UT Stroke Program.

Dr Grotta's research focuses on the development of new therapies for acute stroke patients.  He directs a NIH funded and ACGME accredited stroke training program with a strong emphasis on both basic and clinical research.  Dr. Grotta has already assembled a top notch panel for the NRC's 14th Annual Public Forum during the 2009 Brain Awareness Week on "Stroke and Vascular Disease", to be held on March 7, 2009.

NRC Member Focus: Michael Beauchamp, Ph.D.

Michael Beauchamp, Ph.D.NRC member Michael Beauchamp, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, and his image of "Cortex Interruptus" graces the upper left hand corner of the NRC homepage.

Dr. Beauchamp’s research involves using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to study the neural mechanisms involved in cognition and perception in the human brain.  The two main themes of his research are visual motion perception and multisensory integration. Our visual system is remarkably adept at extracting information from the moving objects that surround us every day, and an understanding of how that works will help us understand the challenges of individuals without those abilities.
