Dash received his B.S. in Physics and was graduated with Honors and Distinction from Utkal University in India. He received his M.S. in Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. Dash joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore where he worked in the laboratory of Dr. P. Balaram for his post-MS diploma in Biophysics. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh under the tutelage of Dr. David Hackney. His thesis research involved applying biochemical and biophysical techniques to understand how chemical energy derived from ATP hydrolysis is converted to mechanical energy.
Following his graduation, Dash continued his professional development as a postdoctoral fellow at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York City under the direction of Dr. Eric Kandel. Dr. Kandel is world-renowned for his pioneering research on the cellular and biochemical analysis of learning and memory, and was the recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In Dr. Kandel’s laboratory, Dash discovered that the transcription factor CREB is critical for long-term memory formation in Aplysia californica, a principle that has been subsequently shown for memory formation in several species.
