Admissions

The Graduate Program in Neurosciences is committed to excellence in training young neuroscientists. Students accepted into the program come from outstanding undergraduate institutions and have diverse backgrounds including the physical, biological, and social sciences. Most have already demonstrated a commitment to research. Although there are no strict course requirements for admission, a suggested undergraduate preparation includes at least one year each of general biology, calculus and physics, two years of chemistry (general, physical, or organic), as well as advanced course work in other areas of science, such as biophysics, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, neurobiology, microbiology, and immunology.

The Neuroscience Program is structured such that applicants must first obtain acceptance to the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS). Consequently during the first academic period you will not be affiliated with the Neuroscience Program and can do research rotations in any GSBS faculty lab at the University of Texas Health Science Center or MD Anderson Cancer Center. After the first nine months you will then be asked to affiliate with a Program (which would be Neuroscience). So, to begin the admissions process you will apply to the Graduate School of Biomedical Science.
